6.6 Billion Cash Have Been Stolen from Pentagon

U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $ 6.6 billion, sent by the planeload in cash and intended for Iraq’s reconstruction after the start of the war. After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, the George W. Bush administration flooded the conquered country with so much cash to pay for reconstruction and other projects in the first year that a new unit of measurement was born.

Pentagon officials determined that one giant C-130 Hercules cargo plane could carry $ 2.4 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of $ 100 bills. They sent an initial full planeload of cash, followed by 20 other flights to Iraq by May 2004 in a $ 12-billion haul that U.S. officials believe to be the biggest international cash airlift of all time. This month, the Pentagon and the Iraqi government are finally closing the books on the program that handled all those Benjamins.

But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $ 6.6 billion in cash — enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.

For the first time, federal auditors are suggesting that some or all of the cash may have been stolen, not just mislaid in an accounting error. Stuart Bowen, special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, an office created by Congress, said the missing $ 6.6 billion may be “the largest theft of funds in national history.”

The mystery is a growing embarrassment to the Pentagon, and an irritant to Washington’s relations with Baghdad. Iraqi officials are threatening to go to court to reclaim the money, which came from Iraqi oil sales, seized Iraqi assets and surplus funds from the United Nations’ oil-for-food program.

It’s fair to say that Congress, which has already shelled out $ 61 billion of U.S. taxpayer money for similar reconstruction and development projects in Iraq, is none too thrilled either.

“Congress is not looking forward to having to spend billions of our money to make up for billions of their money that we can’t account for, and can’t seem to find,” said Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Beverly Hills), who presided over hearings on waste, fraud and abuse in Iraq six years ago when he headed the House Government Reform Committee.

Over 6 Billion Dollars Missing From Money Flown Into Iraq By U.S. Military

Theft of such a staggering sum might seem unlikely, but U.S. officials aren’t ruling it out. Some U.S. contractors were accused of siphoning off tens of millions in kickbacks and graft during the post-invasion period, especially in its chaotic early days. But Iraqi officials were viewed as prime offenders.

The U.S. cash airlift was a desperation measure, organized when the Bush administration was eager to restore government services and a shattered economy to give Iraqis confidence that the new order would be a drastic improvement on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

The White House decided to use the money in the so-called Development Fund for Iraq, which was created by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to hold money amassed during the years when Hussein’s regime was under crippling economic and trade sanctions.

The cash was carried by tractor-trailer trucks from the fortress-like Federal Reserve currency repository in East Rutherford, N.J., to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, then flown to Baghdad. U.S. officials there stored the hoard in a basement vault at one of Hussein’s former palaces, and at U.S. military bases, and eventually distributed the money to Iraqi ministries and contractors.

But U.S. officials often didn’t have time or staff to keep strict financial controls. Millions of dollars were stuffed in gunnysacks and hauled on pickups to Iraqi agencies or contractors, officials have testified.

House Government Reform Committee investigators charged in 2005 that U.S. officials “used virtually no financial controls to account for these enormous cash withdrawals once they arrived in Iraq, and there is evidence of substantial waste, fraud and abuse in the actual spending and disbursement of the Iraqi funds.”

Pentagon officials have contended for the last six years that they could account for the money if given enough time to track down the records. But repeated attempts to find the documentation, or better yet the cash, were fruitless.

Iraqi officials argue that the U.S. government was supposed to safeguard the stash under a 2004 legal agreement it signed with Iraq. That makes Washington responsible, they say.

Abdul Basit Turki Saeed, Iraq’s chief auditor and president of the Iraqi Board of Supreme Audit, has warned U.S. officials that his government will go to court if necessary to recoup the missing money.

“Clearly Iraq has an interest in looking after its assets and protecting them,” said Samir Sumaidaie, Iraq’s ambassador to the United States.

Republicans for Obama

Republicans for Obama

The Iraq war, immigration bill, social security, health care, oil prices etc. etc. This is a list of issues the republicans will try to avoid in upcoming presidential debates over the next year. This is also a list of weapons that the democrats have to win the elections.

Just when it seemed that all hope was lost for the Republicans, Barack Obama announced his candidacy. Suddenly, the republicans found themselves back in with a chance.

Now, while people may think that Barack Obama being black is the biggest disadvantage he has, when it comes to campaign strategy, his skin color is at the bottom of the list for the republicans.

The republicans hope that Obama will win the democratic ticket. If he does, then speech writers will have to work overtime along with campaign strategists to strategically destroy any chance Obama has to win the elections.

First, they will talk about Obama’s experience, or thorough lack of it.

He is the least experienced of all candidates till date. Then, they will talk about his support for abortion and stem cell research. After that, they will start to attack his stance against the war and somehow tie that to the fact that he isn’t even fully American. His father is Kenyan. Attacking his race would spell doom for them so they will stay away from it. However, they will talk about his lack of military record.

Even if Barack Obama does win the democratic nomination for president, it is highly unlikely that he will win the elections.

Merry Christmas Republicans!

Gossip to Good Health!

The word “Gossip” instantly reminds us of the look and feel of the entire situation. “Have you heard about…” is the sentence we can hear every now and then. All humans’ gossip, so we cannot be gender biased! However, studies show that gossip has a positive effect, especially on the females.

With the new scientific study on gossip and health out, the females have a whole lot of reasons to cherish. According to a research report published in the journal Hormones and Behavior, a nice and good gossip is good for health. The scientists at University of Michigan carried out a new study on 160 women and are of view that, “a woman is happier and healthier if she love a good natter with her females friends.”

“Many of the hormones involved in bonding lead to reduction in stress and anxiety,” said research leader Professor Stephanie Brown. Experts also claim that it boosts progesterone levels – a hormone responsible to reduce stress and anxiety in females.

Progesterone produced by women’s ovaries plays a vital role in social, mental, and emotional bonding. Not only that, progesterone has a number of physiological effects, which are amplified in the presence of estrogen – the sex hormones.

The whole idea behind this report is to show the positive effect of gossip in women. Gossip is an idle talk or rumor; quite frequent at home, office, school, or college and a widely accepted method of sharing views and facts. So, next time when you sit with your group, just talk your heart out and stay healthy!

Republican Dilemma Resolved?

Republican Dilemma Resolved?

With the entire Republican delegation finally standing firm against the most recent ‘bailout’ (read ‘pork barrel’) package one has to wonder if backbone has finally returned to the party of low taxes, smaller government and limited spending. For some this represents no change at all. These have been the voices crying out in the wilderness that it is immoral to try to spend our way to prosperity by expecting our children and grandchildren to foot the bill.

For others, honorable men and women, I’m sure, it was the opportunity to vote their conscience rather than playing the role of a good partisan by supporting the party or the president. Still others, the true political types, sensed that opposing this piece of legislation was the best way for them to survive politically since the massive transfer of wealth was now proposed by the rival party and was thus, fair game.

Parties play an important role in our political system by allowing supposedly like minded people to get together and promote shared values…

at least that is the theory. Our system of government is set up to operate with a two party system, which is why it is extremely difficult for any other group to attain a major status. We can’t expect this to change under either party leadership.

What happens when party leadership starts taking the entire structure in a new direction – one neither espoused nor supported by the rank and file party membership? Among other things, it reveals the priorities of their members. Do they value party of principle or principle over party? It gets even more complicated when we factor in tradeoffs people make. That is, conceding a point that is not so critical to accomplish something more important.

This is supposed to be the essence of politics.

Whatever the motivation, we have seen over the past four or so years an abdication of the smaller, less intrusive government direction of the Republican Party. Officials have been listening to the media and not the people. They have been promoting the ‘big tent’ philosophy of backing away from core beliefs so as not to offend more moderate voters who really haven’t thought things through.

How has this worked? Has anyone ever gotten anywhere by straddling a fence? The last two election cycles have produced the two most resounding defeats this party has seen in recent memory. And yet we hear louder cries from some corners to further desert our ideals to win the confidence of the voters. Think about that for a moment: people are supposed to trust and respect us more as we tell them we really don’t want to live out our principles.

So we now see a group looking for a resurrection of credibility, perhaps too late to stop the current madness. On the other hand, it’s never wrong to do the right thing. It may be too late, but not wrong. Perhaps the Republican Party is in the process of recovering its soul. Perhaps they are beginning down path to renewed influence.

In any case, it’s helpful to look at what happens when people, in this case Congressmen and Senators, who go along to get along. Many are former Congressmen and former Senators. Others came closer to defeat than they ever have this past November. Even those that survived have lost their majority, prestige and influence… not to mention self respect.

What has happened to this country that says it honors the memory of men like John Paul Jones? We should remember his reply to demands for surrender “I have not yet begun to fight” as the Bonhomme Richard was burning and slipping under the sea. A few hours later he stood victoriously on the British ship that had destroyed his own. Did he win this victory by surrendering, compromising and giving up the fight?

The point is, the reasons we got into this situation lie in the past, but we should still learn that we can’t compromise on principle and expect to be successful. The Republican majority did… and they are no longer the majority. If the voters don’t understand the value of smaller, less controlling government, the answer is not deserting the ideal, but in better explaining why freedom is better than servitude. Most of the people have been through the public schools which have systematically denigrated the contributions of men and women like Jones in the interest of turning out good little socialist workers. We, including our elected representatives, have to stand up for what is right. We may be like John the Baptist crying in the wilderness. He did not change his message when no one was there, but when the time came, his message was heard.

Perhaps we, Congressmen and Senators could learn something from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he said, “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true, so we’re going to stand up right here.”

Daniel Ellsberg – Dissident Leaker of Pentagon Papers

Daniel Ellsberg – Dissident Leaker of Pentagon Papers

What if you’re convinced your country is in a war that’s unwinnable? What if everyone in the Defense and State Departments believe there’s no realistic chance of achieving any sort of victory?

And what if, even though they know better, they continue to lie in public and state that conditions are improving and that victory is just around the corner?

If you’re a dissident of Daniel Ellsberg’s stature, you risk life in prison to halt the unnecessary bloodbath.

Cold War Marine Commander

Daniel Ellsberg grew up in Detroit, then graduated from Harvard with a Ph.D. in Economics in 1959. He was a committed cold warrior.

Having served as a company commander in the Marine Corps, he became an analyst at the armed forces world policy think tank known as the RAND Corporation. Then, he moved on to the Pentagon, working under Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.

At the Pentagon, Ellsberg saw a nonexistent Gulf of Tonkin attack used by President Johnson to launch a war against North Vietnam.

Ellsberg wanted to understand the war better, so he went to Vietnam in 1965 as a civilian working for the State Department.

In Vietnam, Ellsberg visited 38 of the 43 provinces evaluating pacification. He used his marine training to work with the troops — sometimes in significant combat.

After a few months, he was convinced that “nothing lay ahead for us but frustration and stalemate and killing and dying.”

Ellsberg came back to the U.S. where McNamara asked him to contribute to a Top Secret historical project titled “United States-Vietnam Relations, 1945-1967: A Study Prepared by the Department of Defense.”

The study — a 47 volume Top Secret Department of Defense history of the United States’ political and military involvement in the Vietnam War — would later become famously known as the Pentagon Papers.

The Pentagon Papers

The Pentagon Papers revealed that the Vietnam War couldn’t be won, and, if fighting continued, the conflict would cost many more lives than estimated in public.

In addition, the papers displayed the government’s deep cynicism towards U.S. citizens, and its total disregard for the loss and suffering of U.S. troops.

Because Ellsberg knew releasing the classified Pentagon Papers might land him in prison for the rest of his life, he spent 1970 trying to convince a few Senators to release the papers. It didn’t work. So, with the assistance of Anthony Russo, he leaked copies of the papers to Neil Sheehan at The New York Times.

Pissed-Off President Nixon

On June 13, 1971, President Nixon picked up his Sunday New York Times and saw the wedding picture of his daughter Tricia on the left-hand side of the front page. On the right side, the headline read: “Vietnam Archive: Pentagon Study Traces 3 Decades of Growing U.S. Involvement.”

The next day, an Oval Office tape recorded White House Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman describing the situation to Nixon:

What it says is — Rumsfeld was making this point this morning — what — what it says is — to the ordinary guy, all this is a bunch of gobbledygook. But out of the gobbledygook comes a very clear thing: you can’t trust the government; you can’t believe what they say; and you can’t rely on their judgment. And the implicit infallibility of presidents, which has been an accepted thing in America, is badly hurt by this, because it shows that people do things the President wants to do even though it’s wrong, and the President can be wrong.

President Nixon requested a federal court injunction to stop the Times from publishing excerpts of the report. The Times appealed the injunction, but had to wait for the case to work its way through the court system.

FBI Manhunt

While The New York Times was enjoined from publishing more of the papers, Ellsberg and his wife went underground. Although he was the subject of the biggest manhunt since the Lindbergh kidnapping, Ellsberg distributed more copies of the papers to other newspapers. Nixon filed more injunctions, but couldn’t keep up.

Two weeks later, when he’d run out of copies, Ellsberg surrendered to arrest. Charged with theft, conspiracy, and espionage, he faced twelve felony charges and a possible 115 years in prison.

During the period of the trial, Nixon directed members of the White House Special Investigation Unit (the infamous White House Plumbers) to break into Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office, where Nixon hoped to find information to discredit Ellsberg. The exposure of the government’s gross misconduct against Ellsberg led to the dismissal of all charges against him.

And, on June 30, the Supreme Court ruled that Nixon’s injunctions were unconstitutional, allowing the presses to roll.

A Dissident Ride into the Sunset

Daniel Ellsberg continued his life as a political activist, lecturer, and writer. In 2004, he formed the Truth Telling Project, which called for insiders to leak documents that reveal deception regarding Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq.

In 2004, Ellsberg was one of 100 prominent Americans and 40 members of 9/11 victims’ families that signed the 9/11 Truth Statement. The statement is an explicit call to examine evidence that suggests high-level government officials purposely allowed the 9/11 attacks to occur.

“The public is lied to every day by the president, by his spokespeople, by his officers. If you can’t handle the thought that the president lies to the public for all kinds of reasons, you couldn’t stay at that government at that level, where you’re made aware of it, a week.”

~Daniel Ellsberg.

Gossip Girl Show Online

Since the beginning of first season this soap opera, Gossip Girl, wins lots of popularity. Gossip Girl is a teen drama revolves around the lives of privileged young adults on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in New York City. It is based on the book series of the same name written by Cecily von Ziegesar, and premiered on The CW on September 19, 2007.

The main story is talking about the school life, complicated love relationship, and social politics of the main characters, Serena, Blair, Chuck, Nate, etc. In this drama, drinking, promiscuity, drug abuse seem to be very normal and common, just like a piece of cake, among high school students. Meanwhile, “blog” and “SMS” have become an indispensable part of their life.

Gossip Girl brings audience new vision and elements comparing with other similar teen drama, which makes it a fresh and interesting TV Show.

Of course, it is contributed to the success shaping of the peripheral role—they have been described as “gray”, that swings between good and evil, or can not simply match with good and evil, but not simply described as “black” or “white”, which increases the conflicts between the two central characters, Serena and Blair.

One of the most interesting elements of this show is that each episode begins and ends with the blog page of Gossip Girl, and coming after the voice of the never appeared narrator. She begins the recap with the sentence “Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite”, and ends the recap with whispered voices saying “Where has she been?” “Serena” then the voice says, “And who am I? That’s one secret I’ll never tell, you know you love me xoxo Gossip Girl”. The ending word, XOXO, becomes one of the most fashionable messages among young blood on Facebook or SMS.

On November 10th, the eighth episode of season 4, “Juliet Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” has premiered on. And a familiar love triangle reappeared as we saw Nate and Dan still pining for the gorgeous Serena. Speaking of Serena, she looked gorgeous while getting so much attention in a stunning steel gray.Zuhair Murad dress with a lace overlay. Elsewhere, Blair and Vanessa opted for floral and patterned floor-length frocks by Ralph Lauren and Christian Cota, respectively.

The ladies looked elegant in the gowns, but the sleeveless styles and pastel hues reminded us too much of summer, whereas Serena’s gray dress was the perfect fit for fall. She definitely wore our favorite look of the episode, but what do you think? Clintons Discourages Liberal Democrats

Clintons Discourages Liberal Democrats

Republican’s only hope Hilary Clinton seems to be very good when it comes to comment on other party. It is well known to the Republicans that the Clintons not only boost up Republicans but they also discourage liberal Democrats.

A major segment of the Democratic voters has informed pollsters that it is never going to work even if Hilary somehow got the nomination. None of the contender, from each group excites such negatives.

So, a Clinton application appears to be the best hope for Republicans. The strategy, no doubt, could go wrong.

Democratic followers could figure out the Republican strategy, and give punishment to the Republican Party after all.

But, at this point of time, it is most likely the party’s best expectation. For all the unskilled people in the Clinton’s Party, it has one benefit over the Democrats, which even other party silently acknowledges.

Although it might be tired, and gradually more unpopular, the Republican Party seems to have a message.

Democrats will have to plan for any other theme rather than the conventional ‘Throw out Bush’ theme.

Yes, Mr. Bush might not be in a row next year. By throwing light on a note – the Hilary approach to “centrism and triangulation”, the Republican members are expecting to take some heat off of them.

But, this plan has yet to succeed over the Democrats. So, it might work if Hilary gets the nomination next year.

So, it is only time that can tell how efficient these tactics of Clintons are. But before that, a lot of things have to happen on behalf of the Republicans.

Republican Campaign Megaphone Marketing

By admin on March 29, 2012 in Politics
republican
by NewsHour

Republican Campaign Megaphone Marketing

With a little creative thought, you can take a product that is intended for one Republican campaign purpose and turn it into a Republican campaign marketing multi-tasker. Take megaphones for example. Consider how you can make effective use of a couple hundred megaphones imprinted with your Republican Campaign logo and website.

First, and most obvious, they are great for volunteer use in parades. For maximum effect you should develop a few cheers such as, “When we say, “Vote For” You say (Republican Candidate Name). “

Then, your cheerleaders immediately say, “Vote For” and the crowd responds.

You can have a lot of fun doing this. The crowd gets to hear your Republican candidate’s name and you’re not wasting your money handing out “stuff” to Democrats who won’t vote for you anyway.

Another thing you can do to create excitement among volunteers and supporters is to hold a contest where people submit cheers.

Your campaign chooses however many winners and awards prizes of some sort. Winner’s photos and names (with permission) are posted on your website. This can increase website traffic.

Once you’ve made your investment in the megaphones you can use them in a number of other venues:

1) Let’s say you want to host a bicycle safety rally in conjunction with the local police department. Use the megaphones as traffic cones laying out the course for the kids to ride their bikes.

2) At your Republican campaign fund raisers, Lincoln Day dinners and meet & greets, you place the megaphone over a vase, insert flowers and you have instant table centerpieces.

3) If you purchase the megaphone with the optional end cap, you can fill them with popcorn, making them a great item to give supporters at fundraisers.

And when you think about it, the whole cheering thing is a great way to add fun and excitement to a Republican rally or fund raiser.

If you give it some real thought, you can develop interesting and catchy cheers that can have a lasting effect throughout your Republican campaign.

How cool would it be for about 50 of your supporters to be in the stands at a high school basketball game and your Republican megaphones get 12 seconds on the 11:00 o’clock news sports highlights. Hey! It could happen. Go Team!
